TJ Norris is… Modular. Norris is a multidisciplinary artist presently based in Texas. Norris’ work explores the social complexities and implications of the ever-evolving built environment, expressed through a filter of wabi-sabi or the result of chance, as well as the love affair/disconnect between humankind and technology. Norris has been deeply engaged with sound in many forms through his platform Toneshift, his previous art gallery space Soundvision, years as a freelance cultural writer and other media collaborations. He joins us in the third volume of CLOSE\STARE Compilation… to generate an eternal feedback collaboration from the #Ultraperiferia.
Norris es un galardonado artista multidisciplinar afincado en Fort Worth (Texas). Estudió en el Massachusetts College of Art & Design y en el Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. En la última década, su obra ha sido incluida en el Red Dot Art Festival y Aqua Miami, además de participar en residencias artísticas con Caldera (Oregón) y Kimmel Harding Nelson Art Center (Nebraska). La obra de Norris ha sido reseñada en Art Ltd, Leonardo (MIT Press), Photographer’s Forum, The Oregonian, The Boston Globe y muchas otras publicaciones, y se ha presentado en el Museo de Arte de Tacoma, el Museo de Arte A4 (Chengdu, China), el Museo de Arte de South Bend, Millepiani (Roma), CoCA Seattle, el Centro de Arte Fotográfico de Oregón y muchas otras instituciones.
Su obra explora la psicología abstracta y las complejidades sociales del entorno urbano. Ejemplos de su obra se encuentran en varias colecciones privadas internacionales, así como en la Vanhaerents Art Collection (Bruselas), Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fuller Museum of Art, el Museo de la Cuidad, la Universidad de Harvard, Nike y la Colección de Crónica Visual del RACC. En 2018 Norris publicó su primera monografía de obra fotográfica titulada Shooting Blanks (2008-2013). Entre principios de los 90 y 2013 también pasó años trabajando como comisario independiente llevando exposiciones a instituciones tan diversas como el Centro de Arte Aidekman de la Universidad de Tufts, el Museo de Arte SUNY/Binghamton, el Centro de Bellas Artes Miller, la Universidad de Oregón, el Centro Roland Dille para las Artes, el Centro Newspace para la Fotografía, el Centro de Arte Visual del Estado de Boise y su propia galería/espacio de arte – Soundvision, entre otros.
Comprometido con la música, durante más de 10 años dirigió la revista en línea Toneshift como una rama de su trabajo como periodista. Presenta conceptos musicales que se salen de la corriente dominante con una mirada crítica, ofreciendo reseñas y una selección curatorial de obras sonoras experimentales/electrónicas internacionales en diversas formas y a lo largo de varios episodios evolutivos. Ha escrito para revistas como XLR8, Willamette Week, Signal to Noise, Vital Weekly e Igloo Magazine. Como colaborador, Norris ha trabajado con un variado grupo de artistas internacionales como Das Synthetische Mischgewebe, Nina Hagen, Taylor Deupree, Scanner, Massimo Toniutti, Terre Thaemlitz, Seth Nehil, Mick Chillage, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Janek Schaefer y muchos otros…

TJ Norris presenta...
Fleurs de Nuit was originally created as a coverart prototype for bioelectrical, avant-garde sound artist/composer Michael Prime though the project never surfaced.
From the Pacific Northwest to the Northeast to Texas, through the years I have photographed various floral gardens in peak season – similar to the way people press flowers in scrapbooks, et al. – except here the image is only pixels. As the decades have elapsed, and climate change has taken firmer grasp of our planet, consciously or not, I’ve made a source file of many outings to capture flora.
These ‘night flowers’ are seen long after their lifespan, so it made sense to employ the Surrealist technique of ‘exquisite corpse’ to collage these disparate native flowers into an arrangement that may not be possible otherwise. Instead of decay, the cycle shows the bouquet growing, and in contrast, the short accompanying video shows the life and death of the blossoms.
